Kochavim (Stars) is a fun and dynamic immersion-style Hebrew program for your 3-8 year old in a supplementary education setting (after-school). Youth play and learn in a Hebrew-speaking environment, using music, art, active games, stories, yoga, dance, computers, and drama. Kochavim is an amazingly positive way for children to gain second language skills while having fun with peers, laying a foundation of comfort and delight in Hebrew and Jewish environments that will last a lifetime. Nationally recognized for our innovative curriculum and excellent pedagogy, we now offer two locations, in East and West Portland.

Perspective from a Kochavim parent:

"First off, my kids love the program. And as a parent, I love it too: learning Hebrew will open so many more opportunities for my children to engage positively with Judaism. Incidentally my parents were in town last week .... As professional educators, they were both frankly floored at how much the kids enjoyed Kochavim. They could not believe how excited the kids were to attend Kochavim after a full school day, especially our 5 year-old. They loved watching her run into the building and everyone saying hello to her and making her feel welcomed."

Notz'tzim (Sparkles) started as a younger-sibling program for Kochavim, and has developed into a successful and exciting program in its own rite. Parents and grandparents love the chance to bond with their tots (ages 0-4) in the engaging environment of Hebrew music and active play that Notz'tzim provides each week. Your enjoyment will match the delight of your young ones as they soak up a new language through music, instruments, balls, bubbles, and play. Our classes and the free cd that accompanies your registration for a year-long session will give you a treasury of songs to sing for all of the rituals of your day and year. From holiday songs to lullabyes, welcome songs to camp songs, you'll find that Notz'tzim is a fun and lovely way to start a child's Jewish learning.

From a Notz'tzim Parent:

"Our whole family has loved Notz'tzim...Our son now loves singing all the Hebrew songs, in class and even out of the blue at home. It's really helped him get excited about up-coming holidays! My husband and I have also significantly benefited from Notz'tzim; we've learned Hebrew to use with our kids and broadened our own vocabulary!"

Parent response to Kochavim and Notz'tzim:

I just wanted to let you know how much the Kochavim experience has meant to Adin and our entire family. Adin comes home after the program singing songs, bubbling over about the day, proudly showing off his artwork. He talks about his friends, which in his mind also includes the staff. He has gotten the idea that learning can be fun, that it isn't a chore, and he looks forward to doing it.

I am astounded at the amount of Hebrew that Adin has already learned, and after I'm done with the Melton class this year, will attempt to learn the language myself. My early... language learning experiences had nothing of the ease and joy his experience has, nor did I ever feel the power that came from feeling you can express yourself in another language.

Shoreshim (ages 0-5)

The Shoreshim (Hebrew for "roots") program at Neveh Shalom offers many opportunities for families with young children (ages 0-5 years) to meet, socialize and grow roots in our Portland Jewish community. Shoreshim coordinates Tot Shabbat services, runs parent social gatherings and workshops, celebrates our newest members with an annual New Babies Shabbat, facilitates playgroups, hosts special Shabbat and other holiday programs, and creates a welcoming space for our youngest members and their parents. Together we enjoy synagogue-wide celebrations with music, storytelling, and crafts; giving families the opportunity for a rich Jewish life. Shoreshim relies on parent volunteers to help plan and participate in events as well as Tot Shabbat. Getting involved is a great way to meet community members and to foster and preserve the vibrant spirit of Shoreshim.
